Irons are used for a large number of different types of shots. They are usually used for approach shots towards the green, off the fairway, and difficult shots like out of the rough, under a tree and out of a hazard. Shots made with irons do not have the same distance as fairway woods, but they possess a large variety of uses which makes them very versatile. Irons are numbered 3, 4, 5, … 8, 9 and the lower the number the lower the loft and the longer the shaft. Irons that are greater than nine irons are considered golf wedges and that’s a different topic to be discussed. Irons 1 – 4 and referred as long irons, 5 – 7 are referred as mid irons, and 8 and greater are referred as short irons.. Long irons will not lift the ball off the ground as much as the short irons and are usually used for straight long shots out of the rough. Short irons are usually played for chipping or approach shots. Occasionally, they are used for putting. Typically, golfers carry irons numbered 3 – 9, a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.
